Joyfully Designing Your Dream Home in Israel for Your Growing Family

We are grateful to have been blessed by Hashem with the birth of a grandson and fortunate that we could be with our daughter and family in Canada during this joyous time.

As grandparents, my husband and I have been delighted in welcoming our beloved grandchildren into our home and lives. The pitter-patter of little feet, the infectious laughter, and the pure joy they bring fill our hearts to the brim. While raising our own children was a cherished journey, grandparenting has offered us a unique and equally rewarding experience.

Whether your grandchildren come weekly for Shabbat, during the holidays, or occasionally for vacations, you want your home to be an inviting home away from home.

Designing your home for your aliyah or vacation home in Israel involves planning thoughtful spaces for your grandchildren.  Their visits provide an excellent opportunity to create lasting memories and deepen the special bond you share.  Whether baking chocolate chip cookies and hallah together, playing board games like Othello, or cuddling up for story time, these moments are truly priceless.

The joy of grandparenting includes creating your home to welcome these precious visitors with warmth and comfort.

Consider ample sleeping space

One key consideration is ensuring your grandchildren’s sleeping quarters are cozy and inviting.

You may want bunk beds or trundle beds to maximize space and encourage the fun of pajama parties among the grandkids. Decorate the room with cheerful bedding and plush pillows to make them feel loved and excited to spend time there. Create a reading nook or play area that inspires your grandchildren and makes them eager to explore.

Design storage spaces where your grandkids can keep games, favorite books, and toys. If they have closets for their clothes and pajamas, there’s no need to have them pack suitcases every time they visit. Infants and toddlers need even more room, so you have space to store the pack-and-play, crib, and stroller.

You may want to have foam pads for the floor for both soundproofing and padding. The foam pads help reduce noise between the floors, so your grandkids' activities don't disturb the neighbors downstairs. They also provide a more comfortable surface for the grandkids to sit and play on rather than on the hard stone floors.

Design for your grandchildren’s comfort

Beyond the bedroom, thoughtful touches throughout the house can make grandkids feel truly special.

In the bathroom, consider custom carpentry or installing a step stool so they can reach the sink to wash their little face and hands and brush their teeth. Add towel hooks at a lower height to make it easy for them to feel independent and comfortable.

In the kitchen, plan for a designated drawer or cabinet stocked with kid-friendly bowls, cups, and plates. Tiny hands can help you set the table with excitement and pride. Be sure to have ample space for high chairs and booster seats so that the whole family can dine together for your delicious Shabbat meals.

Enjoy splashing on the balcony

Time with your grandchildren isn’t restricted to indoor activities. Outdoor spaces are also great for bonding. A wading pool with water toys has little ones smiling and laughing. Does your granddaughter love to blow bubbles like mine?

A chalk area can transform your balcony into a beautiful place for creativity and imagination. With a tile floor, cleanup is easy, and the surface is ready for your little Picasso’s next masterpiece.

Create rooms for flexibility

Flexibility is important when designing a home for a growing family.  My clients Nadine and Rich have multiple grandchildren and need flexible and functional spaces. Different room configurations can accommodate various family needs.

One room is designed with two single beds, so it could be used by one family. Another room has a queen-size bed, suitable for a different family. The kids room has 2 sets of trundle beds including 2 pull out beds accommodating 6 grandkids at once. This flexibility allows Nadine and Rich to comfortably host different family members without having to worry about sleeping arrangements.

Plan for your growing family

As you design your home in Israel, you're not just creating physical spaces.  You are cultivating an environment that nurtures your precious relationships with your grandchildren. You demonstrate your love and commitment to making their visits memorable by anticipating their needs and interests.

Let’s embrace the joy of grandparenting and the privilege of welcoming our little ones into our lives. With creativity, a dash of flexibility, and abundant love, you can design your home into a comfortable and elegant haven where cherished memories are made, one grandchild at a time.
